Things to do at the château

Everything you need for a calm, picturesque, family friendly holiday, all in one place.

At Château de Gurat, we pride ourselves on never hearing that dreaded holiday phrase from children…”I’M BORED!” We are confident that we have created a safe, child-friendly environment, where kids can mingle, explore and play. We specialise in “family friendly”, so you are almost guaranteed to find playmates for your children!

We also look after the grown-ups too. From adult-only wine tasting and pizza nights, massages in your gîte, to recommending local and trusted English-speaking babysitters – so you are free to enjoy a romantic dinner at a local restaurants one evening.

To entertain the kids

From morning until night, children soon adopt a busy routine. They’ll look forward to the morning visit to feed the chickens and goats, possibly collecting some fresh eggs on the way, then perhaps stopping off at the trampoline for a bounce before breakfast. Then a swim in the heated pool, followed by a play in the sandpit, a drive on a sit on toy tractor, a slide on a slide or a swing on a swing! Not to mention boules, table tennis and table football for the bigger kids

The pool

Perhaps the most popular activity at the château for both adults and children is relaxing by the pool. The 12 x 6m enclosed and heated (guaranteed 27 degrees from 10am) swimming pool, enjoys panoramic views over the surrounding countryside. There is also a separate 4 x 3m heated paddling pool for children. The main pool has a safety ledge around the deep end for those less confident in the water, and the whole pool area is fenced and gated for younger childrens safety.

The Bergerie

Often the hub of the children’s social activities, and an ideal place to retreat from the mid-day sun. In the Bergerie you will find table-tennis, table football, a library of childrens books, ride on cars and tractors, fancy dress, as well as a TV with Netflix, Disney+ and Amazon Prime, along with  lots of jigsaws and games. There is also a “Tots Zone” designed for little ones with lots of age specific toys and games. .

Our Animals

We have six goats, two guinea pigs and several chickens that love to be visited (and more importantly for them, fed). They are not aggressive and love company. You may also find some fresh eggs in the morning!

To keep the adults occupied

Not forgetting our promise to look after the grown-ups too… Why not join our Neapolitan pizza evening, which is an excellent introduction to the other guests at the start of the week, or taste some excellent local wines accompanied by charcuterie and cheeses with other like-minded parents at our wine tasting evening.

Château de Gurat offers this and so much more – there’s something for everyone…

Wood fired pizza nights

Held weekly, it’s a very relaxed and social affair, and a great chance to meet some of the other guests, enjoy some quality “adult” time. It is split into two parts, with pizzas and crèpes offered for the kids to take away earlier on, followed by an adult’s only evening, starting with an aperitif, and followed by a communal supper on the Bergerie terrace. Our pizzaïolo will serve successive pizzas, giving everyone a chance to try a selection of our favourites (he will not stop until you do!). Nothing tastes like Neapolitan pizza hot out of a wood-fired oven!

Wine tasting evenings

Whilst you are staying near one of the best wine regions in the world…. why not come and try some of them on one of our wine tasting evenings? It’s a fun and relaxed experience to share with other adult guests, where our local wine merchant, Sarah Christie, will walk you through some of the great Bordeaux & Bergerac wines in our region, tasting six different wines from accross the two. The wine will be served with generous accompanying cheese and charcuterie boards, so you will not have to worry about supper too much afterwards. Sarah can also arrange for wine to be delivered to your cottage, to enjoy during  or after your stay!

We offer lots more for the grown-ups too, such as:

Home cooked meals

Take a break from cooking on holiday! We can provide a wide selection of home-cooked meals, using only the finest fresh local ingredients. Available every day, delivered direct to your door, and ready to pop into the oven.

    Babysitting services

Why not have a night (or two) away from the kids? We can provide English speaking babysitters that we know and trust to look after the children, along with recommendations for excellent local restaurants, for parents to enjoy some all important adult only time together.

    Relaxation treatments

Why not fully relax and switch off during your stay with a massage. We work with a local, highly experienced masseuse who can come to the château and offer a variety of massages in the comfort of your own gîte.

    Gardens to stroll

The mature gardens surrounding the château are a delight to wonder, with climbing roses and scented flowers in abundance. It also plays host to a variety of wildlife, a favourite being the squadrons of fledgling swifts hurtling around the château and church towers each evening.
